What motivated kate rich to start feral trade? When most people think about starting their own business, they usually have one primary motivation: to make money. And while there’s nothing wrong with that, it’s not the only reason why people become entrepreneurs. For some, it’s about making a difference in the world or having the freedom to be their own boss. Others simply want to follow their passion.
For Kate Rich, the motivation behind her Feral Trade company was a combination of all three. Kate is passionate about coffee and tea and wanted to create a business that would allow her to share her love of those beverages with others. But she also wanted to do something good for the environment and support small farmers who were struggling to make a living. These two factors led her to start Feral Trade, a coffee and tea company that sources its products from small farms using sustainable methods.
The Story of Feral Trade
Kate started Feral Trade in 2014 out of her bedroom in Brooklyn, New York. With just $600 of savings and a lot of determination, she was able to get the company off the ground. Four years later, Feral Trade has grown exponentially and now has six full-time employees and three part-time employees. The company is on track to do $1 million in sales this year alone.
Feral Trade sources its coffee beans from small farms in Peru and Guatemala. The tea leaves come from farmers in India and Sri Lanka. Kate is very hands-on when it comes to sourcing her products and has traveled to all of these countries multiple times to meet with farmers and learn about their growing practices.
One of the things that makes Feral Trade unique is that they offer what’s called “direct trade” coffees and teas. This means that they cut out the middleman and buy directly from the farmers who are growing the beans and leaves. This allows them to pay farmers up to 50% more than they would receive if they sold their products through traditional channels.
Feral Trade’s approach to food sourcing is just one way that the company is changing the food system for the better. Feral Trade also cuts out the middleman in the food distribution process. By working directly with farmers, Feral Trade is able to sell its products at a lower price than traditional grocery stores. This allows more people to afford healthy, sustainable food.
Feral Trade is also committed to sustainability. They work with farmers who use sustainable growing practices and avoid using harmful pesticides or chemicals. Kate is very passionate about this aspect of her business and makes sure that all of the products she sources meet her high standards for quality and sustainability
